Bubble Gum
Smack, Smack, Smack
This sound would normally be annoying,
The sound gum makes as it clings to your teeth,
Today this is the sound of VICTORY.
They weren’t paying attention,
What was I doing wrong?
Then, I remembered how I was at their age.
I reached into my bag of tricks and found the answer.
They snapped right into the groove,
This little piece of magic did the trick.
It’s still crazy to think…
All for a piece of bubble gum.
Amy,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your poetry. I love the way you tied the colors into the theme of bubble gum. Sometimes it is baffling and silly to think of the things that motivate students...if we could just tap into this every day...think of the possibilities. I enjoyed reading your poem.

Amy,
ReplyDeleteYour piece made me smile. The audio imagery of the "smacking" of the gum gave an immediate setting, and the dramatic reference to that victory allowed me as a reader to empathize with the satisfaction of those small victories we experience when we gain our student's attention. Also, of course, I love the creativity of adding colour to each line, leaving us with a visually appealing work.
Thank you,

Amy,
ReplyDeleteI like your poem. The you centered it, makes it look as if the words are coming out of your mouth in a bubble. I like the idea of this being a trick to help students. So many times, teachers don't want their students to have gum or candy in class. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it as long as the students keep the room clean. On the flip side, if a student were to choke on candy or gum a teacher provided, could we be held liable?

Dear Amy,
ReplyDeleteFantastic genre reflection; I found the use of color to really add a tone of voice to your poem that put me in the classroom with you and your students. Just today my CT used bubblegum to praise students for working quietly, it just doesn't happen on its own very often. The students loved it and continued to work well the entire period, all for a piece of bubblegum. Here's to your continued victories in the classroom, may they be plentiful. I know you are going to make a wonderful teacher, best of luck!
Sincerely,
Kyle Schwanke
